EU Health Award for NGOs 2016
In 2016, the European Commission’s EU Health Award will recognise and reward the efforts and achievements of European NGOs towards reducing the threat to human health from antimicrobial resistance. Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is one of the most challenging threats to human health. Each year, drug resistant infections result in an estimated 25,000 deaths and 1.5 billion euros in healthcare costs and productivity losses in the EU.
Through the EU Health Award, the European Commission aims to draw attention to outstanding good practices by NGOs to reduce the threat to human health from AMR and encourage their wider replication throughout the EU.
Fighting Antimicrobial Resistance
The European Commission is proud to dedicate this year’s EU Health Award to reward initiatives of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that contributed or are contributing to reducing the threat to human health from antimicrobial resistance within the European Union.
The problem of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is increasing worldwide with an estimated 700,000 deaths per year globally due to resistant infections. Infection from antimicrobial resistant organisms can be a particular problem in hospitals but also in the community or farms. They can be transmitted through direct contact and during healthcare procedures as well as via food, livestock and the environment. A ‘one health’ approach is therefore required to effectively tackle the AMR challenge involving action throughout human health and food systems as well as on antimicrobial research and development – as set out in the WHO Global Action Plan on AMR of 2015 and the EU Action Plan against AMR adopted in 2011.
With this award, the European Commission would like to highlight and reward outstanding initiatives of international, European, national or regional non-governmental bodies which have significantly contributed to the fight against AMR.
Similarly to the EU Health Award 2015, this award is linked to the European Commission’s work to build up a database of good practices in various health fields (AMR in 2016, specifically) from NGOs that can serve as models for the future. Access to this inventory shall inspire other NGOs in EU Member States and International Organisations to replicate these good practices in their protection of human health against AMR.
The European Commission calls upon international, European, national and regional NGOs active in the field of AMR to submit their initiatives to the EU Health Award 2016. The call for applications focuses on reducing the threat to human health in fields such as:
- Prevention of infection
- Appropriate use of antimicrobials
- Surveillance
- Tackling AMR from a specific disease perspective (e.g. Tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS…).
- Other initiatives that can reduce the threat to human health from AMR.
Potential activities – targeting the general public, patients, healthcare workers or international organisations – that NGOs carry out could include the following:
- Advocacy
- Awareness-raising
- Education/training
Among the non-governmental bodies that respond to this call, three will be selected for outstanding initiatives, based on their quality and effectiveness. The prizes will rank as follows:
- 1st prize: 20 000 €
- 2nd prize: 15 000 €
- 3rd prize: 10 000 €
All international, European, national and regional non-governmental bodies legally registered in the EU Member States or another country participating in the 3rd Health Programme are eligible for this award.
The EU Health Award is funded under the 3rd Health Programme 2014-2020.
